The [LGTC](http://www.lgtc.nl/) started producing and analyzing high throughput Next Generation Sequencing data early 2007. Initially, two Dell Precision workstations were used for the analysis of this data. After the LGTC aquired it's second Illumina GAII in 2008, Dell was consulted for ideas on a small HPC cluster to handle the output. Dell was kind enough to sponsor the LGTC with such a cluster consisting of a head node, a chassis, and two M600 blades. Additionally, a third M600 blade was bought and a small HPC cluster was born. All that was left was a name for the cluster. Since the ICT department required an animal name for all the attached servers, internal discussion concluded it needed to be a tough and ferocious creature. This resulted the head node to become the Shark cluster. The execution nodes were named after shark subfamilies.

Finally, a logo was needed and the search on [Google Images](http://www.google.nl/search?hl=nl&biw=950&bih=881&gbv=2&tbm=isch&sa=1&q=sharks&oq=sharks&aq=f&aqi=g8&aql=undefined&gs_sm=e&gs_upl=14986l15810l0l6l5l0l0l0l0l164l624l1.4l5) began. Lots of sharks were found but the [Mako Shark](http://www.google.nl/imgres?imgurl=http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_kxPG6y8Qctk/S9nQGQef1EI/AAAAAAAAa9I/a5vr79uuPmQ/s800/Dangerous+Shark+Photos+(14).jpg&imgrefurl=https://www.google.nl/search?hl=nl&biw=950&bih=881&gbv=2&tbm=isch&sa=1&q=sharks&oq=sharks&aq=f&aqi=g8&aql=undefined&gs_sm=e&gs_upl=14986l15810l0l6l5l0l0l0l0l164l624l1.4l5#gbv=2&hl=nl&q=sharks+mako&tbm=isch) was chosen. With some [Gimp](http://www.gimp.org)ing the Shark logo was created after this image. This same logo was converted to an ASII representation which shows whenever one logs into the head node.
